Places to stay in Belgium: b&b Fika

Looking for special places to stay in Belgium? We’ve got you covered. In Swedish the word fika means coffee break, usually accompanied by fringe benefits like cake, cookies and friends. We discovered Fika means something else as well: staying in the lovely b&b of Carl and Hilde in the west of Belgium. Watch out, it’s only a matter of time before the Swedish dictionary confirms this.

We fell in love with the west of the country a while ago. There’s so much exciting stuff to discover, that we find ourselves drawn to the region time and again. Why? It’s hard to explain. Because of the bountiful nature, naturally. But not only that. There’s something authentic and mysterious about this part of Belgium.

Ecological design

The only thing that’s hard to come by, is a nice place to stay. That is: unless you’re a big fan of brownish interiors and cold tile floors. Because in that case you have plenty of choice. So when owners Carl and Hilde opened their bed and breakfast last summer, it didn’t take long for them to catch our attention.

The two rooms – aptly named Raven and Ugglan – are part of an ecologically renovated building, right next to the family’s house, in the middle of a beautiful nature reserve. You can book a room for two or rent the whole place for four, including the wonderfully designed kitchen slash living room.

Swedish Christmas

Sweden was a big source of inspiration, and not just because it has been fashionable for a few years now. Carl and Hilde have been spending Christmas holidays with their two children in the Scandinavian country, long before Swedish design became de rigueur.

It’s nice to see they put their money where their mouth is: lots of natural materials, careful design and excellent bedding, covered with organic cotton sheets by Belgian label Kalani.

It’s almost a shame the area has so much to offer, because the only thing you want to do here is never leave the house.
